Vaišnoriškės Ethnographic Village
Vaišnoriškės Village, built in the traditional architectural style of Aukštaitija, is a real treasure trove for those interested in Lithuanian history. By the way, it’s interesting to note that, having begun to take shape in the late 18th century, the first impetus for the village was… a nearby tavern! In the 1920s it was replaced by a steam-powered lumber mill. The very first homestead, which arose here in 1830, belonged to a man named Jonas Žilėnas – and is now included in the Cultural Heritage Register. Even though the village’s plan is compact, its homesteads and their individual buildings are arranged freely, on both banks of Būka River, and the shape of the courtyards are curiously open, yet of irregular shape. The village now sports 2 huts, a barn, 2 cattle sheds and a sauna – all restored to match their original style. And since the village is located in the Aukštaitija National Park, once you’ve had your fill of rustic beauty – why not continue your weekend hike among the park’s verdant greenery!
