In Lithuania, you can experience all four seasons. Here winter, spring, summer and autumn all feel different and offer different experiences, so you can plan your trip based on things you enjoy doing. If you come in the winter months, you will likely see snow, but be prepared for cooler weather – the temperatures may occasionally drop to as low as -20°C or even lower! Spring and autumn are equally charming, and add new colours to the country’s landscape. In summer, there are many warm and sunny days. The average temperature in July is +17.9°C, but there are days when it can get as hot as +30°C. Whatever the season, remember the Lithuanian saying – there’s no bad weather, only poorly chosen clothes.

If you’re a citizen of any country that is part of the Schengen Area, you don’t need a visa to visit Lithuania. Visas are also not required for citizens of many other countries who come to Lithuania for short-term purposes (no more than 90 days in a period of 180 days) or transit through its territory. You can check if your country’s citizens need a Lithuanian visa here.

If you speak English, you won’t have any problem getting around Lithuania, as nearly 97% of those between the ages of 25 and 64 know at least one foreign language, including English.

The Lithuanian currency is the euro, which replaced the country’s previous currency – the Lithuanian litas – in 2015.

The vast majority of shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, and other commercial establishments in Lithuania take payments by card, including contactless payments. For complete peace of mind, though, you may want to bring some cash with you when going shopping in markets and fairs, or traveling to more remote tourist destinations and rural tourism homesteads.

The all-purpose emergency number in Lithuania is 112.

One of the best ways to experience a country is through its food. Lithuanian cuisine is rooted in seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and long-standing culinary traditions, offering rich and authentic flavours.

Traditional dishes are hearty, comforting and full of character. Even if you don’t have the chance to dine in a local home, you can still enjoy authentic Lithuanian cuisine in restaurants across the country.

Some must-try Lithuanian dishes include:

Šaltibarščiai (pink soup)

Cepelinai (potato dumplings with different types of filling, pork being the most traditional)

Šakotis (traditional cake cooked over an open flame)

Spa treatments in Lithuania often include mineral water therapies, mud baths, massages, amber, honey and herbal treatments designed to relax, restore and rejuvenate both body and mind.

Some of the most popular wellness and spa destinations are Lithuania’s spa towns, where nature and relaxation go hand in hand:

Druskininkai – Surrounded by pine forests and rich in mineral springs and therapeutic mud, Druskininkai is the country’s best‑known wellness resort town. Find out about the wellness offering in Druskininkai here.

Birštonas – A smaller, very calm resort town on the banks of River Nemunas, ideal if you want nature, walking and gentle wellness rather than crowds.

Palanga – If you like combining wellness with the sea, dunes and long walks on the beach, Palanga is your spot.

Lithuania is a great destination for a workation, whether you’re working solo or as part of a team. With a mix of nature, modern comfort and unique stays, it offers plenty of inspiring places to combine work and travel.

From historic manors and spa resorts to treehouse villas and countryside retreats, accommodation options are designed to help you stay productive while enjoying a change of scenery. And to those who don’t want to be mixing their places of rest and their remote offices, Lithuania offers numerous inspirational co-working spaces, ranging from railway stations to cruise terminals.

Midsummer (Joninės) – Celebrated on the night of June 23-24 across Lithuania, especially in places like Kernavė and Jonava, this is Lithuania’s ancient summer solstice festival marking the longest day of the year. On the shortest night of the year, you will find people gathering around huge bonfires, jumping over the fire for good luck, singing age-old songs, weaving flower crowns and even going on a quest for the mythical fern blossom (fun fact – ferns don’t actually bloom).

Vilnius Pink Soup Fest – Held in May in Vilnius, this playful city festival celebrates Lithuania’s iconic cold beetroot soup (šaltibarščiai) with pink-themed events, food experiences and a joyful summer kickoff atmosphere.

Užgavėnės (Shrove Tuesday) – Taking place in February or early March across Lithuania, with the biggest celebration event held in Rumšiškės, this lively winter farewell festival features masks, pancakes, bonfires and symbolic rituals to “drive away winter”.

Kaziuko Mugė (St. Casimir’s Fair) – Every March in Vilnius, this traditional craft and food fair fills the city streets with handmade goods, local treats and springtime celebrations marking the arrival of warmer days. At the fair, you’ll always see hundreds of craftsmen, artisans, master chefs, and artists, offering a wide variety of delectable foods and unique items to decorate your home. Make sure not to leave the fair before you’ve gotten yourself one of each: a ringshaped pastry roll “necklace”, a traditional verba (Easter palm), and some Kaziuko Širdies (St. Casimir’s Heart) cookies. Without these, Kaziuko Mugė ain’t Kaziuko Mugė at all!

Sea Festival (Jūros Šventė) – Held on the last weekend of July in Klaipėda, this coastal celebration features parades, concerts and maritime traditions, turning the entire port city into a vibrant summer festival. First held back in 1934, it is among Lithuania’s biggest and longest-running annual events.

Lithuanian Song and Dance Festival – Taking place every 4-5 years in Vilnius, this UNESCO-listed event gathers thousands of performers from across the country for a spectacular celebration of Lithuanian music, dance and national culture. During the event, thousands of choristers, dancers, and musicians flow like tiny rivulets from across the land to a single point of confluence – all for the purpose of allowing you to enjoy the most gorgeous songs, impressive dance performances, and utterly mesmerising melodies.
