Trakai Castle – a fairytale adventure

Built all the way back in the 14th-15th centuries, the Gothic-style Trakai Castle is one of the most spectacular mediaeval structures of its kind on the continent – and the only island castle in Eastern Europe.

Located just 30 min. away from Vilnius by car, the castle – once a major stronghold of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania – played a significant part in Lithuanian history. It witnessed multiple battles, political negotiations, signatures of treaties, honorary visits, and more. Following a period of decline in the 18th century, the castle was rebuilt after WWII, and is now among the most popular tourist destinations in Lithuania.

Resplendent in red brick, it stands in the middle of Lake Galvė, the fairytale-like Trakai Castle has much to offer throughout the year. For instance, during winter, the frozen lake is often used as an impromptu skating rink by locals and visitors alike, with the snow-topped castle roof looming cosily in the background. In the summer, on the other hand, Trakai Castle hosts mediaeval festivals, music shows, and other events in the courtyard. To get a proper 360° look at its wondrous edifice, you can board a kayak, boat, or yacht, and then switch gears by visiting the rich castle museum, which features numerous archaeological findings, mediaeval weapons, armour, pottery, and other artefacts.
