Žaliakalnis was once a forest with only a couple of farmsteads nestled between vast expanses of greenery. In the modern period, it underwent rapid urbanisation that followed the construction of the Kaunas-Daugavpils highway, and continued during the Interwar period. Thanks to its excellent strategic position, Žaliakalnis and its environs soon became home to the city’s intellectuals.

Thanks to its excellent strategic position, Žaliakalnis and its environs soon became home to the city’s intellectuals. The most famous Lithuanian opera singer of all time, K. Petrauskas, composer J. Gruodis, author of Forest of the Gods , B. Sruoga, and other cultural icons lived here. Today you can visit their houses-turned-museums and see how the cultural elite of 30s Lithuania lived.
