The open-air Kiemo galerija occupies a courtyard in central Kaunas, among houses that were inhabited mostly by Jewish families before World War II. Today, the courtyard’s walls don murals and contemporary art installations telling both the joyful and tragic stories of the people who lived there.
The open-air Kiemo galerija (Yard Gallery) is a space where art and history unite. The gallery occupies a courtyard in central Kaunas, among houses that were inhabited mostly by Jewish families before World War II. The gallery’s creator, artist Vytenis Yakas, moved into the building a decade ago and set out to bring the current residents together to commemorate the lives of former inhabitants. Today, the courtyard’s walls don murals and contemporary art installations telling both the joyful and tragic stories of the people who lived there.
