Šakotis

Few things appeal to a Lithuanians’ sweet tooth as much as Šakotis or Tree Cake, which does, indeed, resemble an actual tree. This a traditional dessert made from butter, egg whites and yolks, flour, sugar, and cream, which is cooked on a rotating spit. And it's this rotating spit that gives the cake its very distinctive form. Associated with the year’s biggest feasts, it’s rare to find a Christmas or Easter table that’s unadorned with this delicious treat. First developed by monks in the 15th century, its unique production process is a proudly held tradition, and you’ll find that there are plenty of bakers throughout the country who will be happy to show you how it’s done. The cake even has its own museum!
