Decommissioned as an active prison in 2019, it has since been repurposed to fit a more positive mission - art. Now home to 250 artists, what is known as Lukiškės Prison 2.0, houses studios, events spaces, a stage and even a bar.
For 115 years, the high walls of Lukiškės Prison in central Vilnius were lined with barbed wire, and through its painful history, many of the martyrs to Lithuanian freedom suffered within, as well as innumerable prisoners from all rungs of society. Decommissioned as an active prison in 2019, it has since been repurposed to fit a more positive mission - art. Now home to 250 artists, what is known as Lukiškės Prison 2.0, houses studios, events spaces, a stage and even a bar. Meanwhile, the prison is also becoming a popular filming location for international productions - the massive hit Netflix show Stranger Things used it for its 4th season. So, if you are in Vilnius, it’s definitely worth checking out the prison. Guided tours are available everyday that will give you a taste of what it was like, as well as some choice stories from its long and troubled past. And it’s also worth checking out if there are any gigs happening, it’s a truly unique experience seeing a gig in these singular surroundings.
