More information
It would be safe to say that Gediminas (Upper) Castle is the most significant historical location in Vilnius. The castle stands in the very center of the city, where it served as a political center of Lithuania for centuries. Its only surviving defensive tower is worthy of a visit in itself, but the exhibition inside is even more valuable.

There’s a very good reason why King Gediminas decided to move the capital of his country here. Archaeological research shows that the area where Gediminas (Upper) Castle stands has been inhabited since Neolithic times, and the first castle was built in this place sometime during the 10th century. The castle was of enormous strategic importance during the wars with the Teutonic Knights. For centuries, the castle acted as the symbolic axis of Vilnius and Lithuania. The interactive exhibition ""Time Line Views through the Windows of Gediminas Tower"" reveals this perfectly. It allows you to experience the Teutonic invasion, witness the growth of the city during the Renaissance, and enjoy the panorama of the castle as it was in 1785. A visit to the tower of Gediminas Castle is an extraordinary opportunity to experience how the city has changed through the centuries. Your tour will start with an acquaintance with the ancient Baltic heritage, continue with familiarization with the legacy of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and end with an insight into the significance of the site for the Sąjūdis independence movement.
