Krokulė spring and rock
The Krokulė Spring is located in the Utena District, on the right side of the Šventoji River valley. In the early 20th century a stone pipe (0.6 m in height and 1.2 m across) was inserted into the fountainhead, such that the surplus water coming up through it flows South, and joins Šventoji 100 m further on. Local inhabitants associate the stone with Christ’s (or Virgin Mary’s) visitation. According to legend, a group of little shepherds were once tending to their animals near the spring, when they saw Jesus. He blessed them and immediately disappeared. The stone, which still exists near a little chapel, bears Christ’s footprint and the inscription: “O God, our Lord, please forgive us”. The spring itself, which receives around 7 litres of water every second, has long been known for its curative properties and, according to some, is a source of happiness – and even protection from the Lithuanian Zeus, Perkūnas!
