Vyžuonai Heath Nature Trail
Vyžuonai Region has been known for the beauty and exceptional diversity of its natural environment from ancient times. For instance, here you’ll find one of the country’s very few eskers (this one, by the way, even contains some astronomical rocks!) and the Lithuanian orchid – Neottia nidus-avis, or Bird’s-Nest Orchid. The region also features an easy-to-navigate nature trail which offers some truly unique sights. For instance, walking across its 6 stations you’ll visit the ancient hillforts of Vyžuonai. Investigated by scientists as late as 1986-88, these were found to be Lithuanian tribal burial mounds characteristic of the 9th-12th centuries. Proceeding further, you’ll soon come across Lake Baltys which, according to legend, only bestows its coolness and natural plenty on those who act respectfully towards it. Finally, around the fifth station you’ll find one of Lithuania’s few remaining pristine natural gems – a never-drained, undamaged marsh, and then end the hike on a beautiful natural heath.
