Lithuanian spring begins at the film theatre. For nearly three decades now, the festival Vilnius International Film Festival, which takes place in March, attracts filmgoers and cinephiles from across the country to enjoy a curated selection of the best productions by the world’s top filmmakers. The festival started in a thoroughly unassuming way in 1995, when a set of films was screened at the legendary, and now longdefunct, theatre Lithuania. As time went by, the festival continued to grow in scope, eventually becoming an integral part of the cultural life of the country’s five major cities. What’s great about Vilnius International Film Festival is the opportunity it provides to not only see films that have already been lauded by critics, but also to take part in premieres of the latest homegrown productions. It is precisely during this festival that Lithuania’s most talented filmmakers introduce their new shorts and featurelengths to the public. No selfrespecting cinephile should miss this unique occasion!
