Jonas Šliūpas Museum
The museum is housed in an impressive wooden 19th-century villa that belonged to the noble family of Tiškevičiai. This particular location was chosen for the museum for a good reason. It was in this building that Jonas Šliūpas settled after becoming the mayor of Palanga. Quite a culmination for an impressive career trajectory for a man who, during his lifetime, also worked as a doctor, publisher, publicist, and lawyer. Although his name will always be linked to the spread of the idea of Lithuanian identity, Šliūpas was also a true citizen of the world. He lived in the USA for more than three decades and also spent years in Sweden, Ukraine, and Switzerland. The museum's exhibition reveals the story of this intense life, rich in ideas and activities. It is an exceptional opportunity to take a peek into the professional and private life of this unjustly forgotten man. After all, without him, there would be no Palanga as we have it today. It was Šliūpas who made the most significant contributions to the city's recovery from the fires that plagued it in the 1930s and to making it the most popular health resort in Lithuania.
