The Kaunastic city of Kaunas

The second-biggest Lithuanian city – Kaunas, is a real treasure trove. It offers not only a rich mediaeval heritage, but also heaps of eye-popping street art, singular examples of interwar Modernist architecture, a booming food scene – and whatever else you could possibly desire.
All about Kaunas

Kaunas has had the honour of being the provisional capital of Lithuania in 1919-1940, and the European Capital of Culture in 2022 – and it’s little wonder why. For one, the city has a gorgeous cobbled Old Town, its highlight being the Kaunas Castle – the oldest such castle in the country. It was built all the way back in the 14th century and today hosts the fascinating Kaunas City Museum.

In Kaunas, you will also find the world’s only Devil’s Museum (Velnių muziejus), a swan-shaped Town Hall (Kauno rotušė) and the Ninth Fort Museum which introduces the architectural and military history of the site that once served as a labour prison.
