Klaipėda, the gate to the Baltic Sea
Founded by Teutonic Knights in the 13th century, Lithuania’s only seaport, Klaipėda, is a real gem of the Baltics. What you’ll find here is a rich mix of ancient heritage and modern urban life. The city’s Old Town is known for its fachwerk-style houses, Germanic architecture, and countless sculptures, each with a unique story to tell. Klaipėda also boasts a plethora of museums, galleries, art spaces, and a vibrant nightlife. The city hosts many different events throughout the year, such as its famous Sea Festival, and functions as a gateway to the beautiful Lithuanian countryside, the UNESCO-protected Curonian Spit (a real natural marvel!), and the country’s summer capital – Palanga.
So don’t let the size of Klaipėda fool you – there’s more to see and experience here than in many cities three times the size!
