Theatre

While in many other European countries there is an assumed cultural elitism when it comes to the dramatic arts, here theatre is a national pastime embraced by all. It’s not unusual for even the most demanding performances to be sold out in advance and Lithuanian directors are very much in demand.

Although not every Lithuanian town has its own cinema, many have a small theatre. And yes, many, if not most, performances are in the local tongue, but this is one of the best ways of experiencing the full poetic breadth of the language. It’s also a great way to get to grips with the culture, and see the local population at its fashionable and well-dressed best.
