In the second half of the 19th century, European architects turned slightly to the past, seeking inspiration in buildings from previous centuries. This is how the Neo-Gothic style emerged, combining medieval Gothic and modern ideas. Rokiškis boasts one of its most distinctive examples – the Church of St. Matthew the Apostle Evangelist.
Like the entire history of Rokiškis, the church's story is inseparable from the Tyzenhauz family. They commissioned its construction. The church quickly became not only a religious but a cultural center of the city as well. For instance, the organists who worked in it significantly contributed to the education of local musicians.
The Church of St. Matthew the Apostle Evangelist stands out both in its exterior and interior. The Tyzenhauzes spared no expense, so inside the sanctuary, you can admire valuable wooden crafts from Belgium, stained glass windows and bronze sculptures from Austria, and a gilded bronze altar from France.
