The region where the modern Rokiškis District is located was a crossroads of different cultures for centuries. This became particularly evident when the Livonian Order established itself in the territory of present-day Latvia and began attacking Baltic tribes. In response, the Baltic tribes built a series of defensive fortifications, one of which was the Moškėnai Hillfort.

Scientists calculate that people lived in this area much earlier, as far back as the 1st millennium BC. This is confirmed by tools, weapons, and jewelry found in the hillfort's territory. Nearly half a thousand various artifacts have been discovered in Moškėnai, likely just a small part of the treasures hidden in this place.

Today, it's a perfect spot to exercise and enjoy the scenery. Climbing the steep hillfort slope, you'll reach a spacious plateau that offers a view of two rings of defensive ditches and the stretching hills of Aukštaitija.
