Lithuania’s second religion - basketball

As Lithuanians like to say, basketball is our second religion. And this isn’t far from the truth. The matches of BC Žalgiris, the legendary team from Kaunas active since 1944, are regularly attended by massive numbers of fans. To really get Kaunas, consider joining the fans for an evening.

Watching two strong teams face off against each other in a crowded arena with die-hard ultras, decked in green and white, chanting in support of their favourite is something you won’t soon forget. And this means a lot to the team, with players often interacting with the fans and making their best effort to make them proud. Žalgiris is widely considered to have the most glorious history of all Lithuanian basketball teams – and the most wins, too.

Another thing to look forward to is the world-class Žalgiris Area itself – the heart of the action. Its stunning location on the island of Nemunas River is a nice bonus to the overall experience. The 40,000 m2 space can accommodate up to 15,000 people during basketball and football matches and up to 20,000 during music shows. It hosts well over 100 events per year, attended by around 600,000 people in total.
