Located on the northern outskirts of the capital, Liubavas Manor is one of the oldest manor estates in the country, dating all the way back to the 15th c. Established as a museum in 2011 by the renowned sculptor and cultural icon Gintaras Karosas (who is also known for establishing Europas Park), the museum aims to explore the history, cultural and industrial heritage of the Manor complex. With its working water mill, and fully restored interior that won the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage for high quality restoration, it provides visitors with a rare chance to experience history at first hand. The Manor also conceals a romantic past. Sigismund the Old, the sovereign of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, transferred the manor to his son Sigismund Augustus, who in secret had married Barbora Radvilaitė, the widow of the former owner of the manor. Visitors can experience this history for themselves, but be aware that the museum is only open from April 15th to October 31st.
