Jonas Basanavičius Birthplace
The house that belonged to Jonas Basanavičius's family was originally built in 1832. They were wealthy farmers, so their homestead is a perfect example of how people lived at that time. The main features of the house are its large courtyard, the two-ended wooden living quarters, and the abundance of outbuildings and implements. However, more interesting than the house itself are the people who lived in it and the environment that shaped the personality of the doctor, socialite, and signatory. Inside the house, you’ll find the folklore and mythology publications, personal belongings, and cultural treasures that Jonas Basanavičius accumulated during his lifetime. Exhibitions and educational classes are open all year round, but the full beauty of the homestead reveals itself during the summer season when the nearby oak grove and the impressive chestnut tree, which dates back to the time of Jonas Basanavičius himself, come into full bloom, and various events and amateur theater festivals are held at the museum.
