Picking mushrooms is an old, deep-rooted Lithuanian tradition. Come autumn, you'll find a huge variety of mushrooms to choose from – and lots of people searching for them in the country's numerous, vast forests.
Come early autumn (September is a popular month), head into any Lithuanian forest, especially in the morning, you’re likely to find groups of people roaming through moss and thickets in search of what seems to be some buried treasure. And that treasure is? Mushrooms. In fact, it’s a bit of a competition, with friends and family members competing to see who can gather the most, and more importantly, biggest mushrooms.
