Saldutiškis Manor
Located in Utena, the Saldutiškis Manor has been known since the days of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. In the early 19th century it was purchased by Antanas Jaloveckis, who became one of its greatest enthusiasts. Later, the entire complex played a number of roles, becoming a Salesian monastery, then a military hospital during WWI, and then a school. Finally, in 2005, the Svitojai family took it upon themselves to restore the manor’s original architecture, as well as its gorgeous polychrome hall paintings and mouldings. The manor park sports 22 species of trees and bushes, a 50 metre-long small-leaved lime alley, numerous elm trees, and such imported tree species as Norway maples, European and silver firs, grey walnuts, and others. The Saldutiškis Manor building complex contains a neoclassical manor building, remnants of a granary, cattle shed and stable – and even an ice-cream parlour! Lately, the manor has also been hosting cultural, economic, and educational activities.
