The Cold War Museum, located within the confines of the former Soviet Union's missile silo launch complex, unveils the chilling realities of an era shadowed by the imminent threat of nuclear war. Between 1963 and 1978, this fortress housed four SS-4 medium-range missiles, each armed with 2-megaton thermonuclear warheads, representing a significant portion of the nuclear arsenal aimed at Europe. Visitors are drawn into a bygone age as they navigate through the restored multi-stage electronic security system, wander corridors once lined with missile fuel conduits, and explore control rooms where one push of a button could have changed history forever.
A walk through the missile technology hall reveals the design of the SS-4 missiles, while a nearby hall houses the armament exhibition, showcasing the inner workings of the launch complex. Yet, beyond the machinations of war, the exposition delves into the human side of the Cold War. Amidst the machinery and stark reminders of nuclear threats, exhibits featuring political propaganda which was an intrinsic part of the arms race.
