“400 years ago, the Canons Regular of Penance arrived in Videniškiai. The monks have not been here for 200 years, yet their presence can still be strongly felt. Perhaps you, too, might encounter the spirit of a monk?”

This is how the Videniškiai Monastery Museum addresses its visitors, inviting them to take part in the educational night programme called ‘A Mysterious Night Walk with Lanterns’. It is one of the ways to experience the atmosphere that once filled the residence of the senior canons (infulates) of the Canons Regular of Penance, built in Videniškiai in 1754. The history of the order is presented in the Videniškiai Monastery Museum, a branch of the Molėtai Regional Museum, located within the former monastery complex.

Step by step, visitors can discover the traces the monastery has left in history. The Chapter Hall on the second floor is adorned with portraits of the monastery’s superiors, painted some 250 years ago. These portrait frescoes are unique in the Lithuanian provinces.

The museum also preserves the book “Broma, atverta ing viečnastį” by Mykolas Olševskis, a priest of the Canons Regular of Penance and Doctor of Theology. Written in 1753 in the Videniškiai Monastery itself, the book is considered a significant monument of early Lithuanian written heritage.

Also, the museum displays a collection of 400 Easter eggs, decorated with ornamental patterns by folk artist Vanda Giedrytė.

Spiritual experiences: on the 4th day of each month, the days dedicated to Blessed Mykolas Giedraitis, who originated from this area, are observed. At 12:00, Holy Mass for the Blessed is celebrated in Videniškiai Church, after which participants are invited to visit the Monastery Museum.
