Tytuvėnai Holy Virgin Mary Queen of Angels Church and Bernardine Monastery Ensemble
The ensemble has long attracted pilgrims from around the world, drawn by the image of the Mother of God with Child, the Chapel of the Holy Stairs, and centuries-old pilgrimage traditions.
Originally shaped by Gothic influences and enriched with Renaissance elements, the ensemble is dominated by Baroque architecture. In the 18th century, an impressive arcaded Way of the Cross gallery was created in the church courtyard, featuring 24 frescoes depicting biblical scenes. A long-standing tradition invites visitors to ascend the Holy Stairs of the Chapel of Christ on their knees, pausing to honor relics displayed at each step. One of the chapel’s most notable relics is a drop of blood of Pope Saint John Paul II, preserved here.
The monastery houses the Tytuvėnai Pilgrims’ Centre, which offers guided tours of the church, monastery ensemble, and the town of Tytuvėnai, as well as educational experiences.
For example, visitors can enjoy an intriguing experience in the authentic monastery cellar, once the Bernardine refectory, where they are invited to take part in a traditional monastic-style meal served as it was 300 years ago – simple, unhurried, and in silence. From October to March, the Pilgrims’ Centre also organizes night-time guided tours of the church and monastery ensemble.
